Community swimming to be made available at Aberystwyth University’s pool

A number of pre-booked slots for the community will be available at Aberystwyth University’s swimming pool as maintenance work continues at Plascrug Leisure Centre.

As a Local Authority, we recognise the current difficulties with respect to the Council pool closures across the county. We also recognise the need for residents in Ceredigion to be able to go swimming. Ceredigion County Council has been in discussions with Aberystwyth University with regards to the possibility of utilising their swimming pool for community use whilst Plascrug Leisure Centre is closed. The Local Authority is extremely grateful to the University for their support and collaboration with these arrangements.

We are pleased to announce that from 28 June 2021 onwards, if the number of coronavirus cases in Ceredigion remain low, a limited number of community swimming slots will be available at the University’s Sport Centre. These will go hand in hand with the slots allocated to the University’s regular users. Each slot will be 1 hour sessions, which include 45 minutes of pool time.

Pre-booking will be essential as walk-ins will not be permitted. Full details on the slots available and how to book will be posted on our website shortly.

Plascrug Leisure Centre

The decommissioning work at Plascrug Leisure Centre is continuing, but the amount of work to be done to the building is far more than initially anticipated. Every part of the building was used when it was transformed into a COVID-19 Field Hospital by Hywel Dda University Health Board. Ceredigion County Council is committed to reopening the Leisure Centre as soon as possible, but we must ensure that we are able to provide high quality and safe facilities for all our service users to enjoy.

The patience and understanding of all users is appreciated as we work towards reopening.

Slots can also be booked at Aberaeron Leisure Centre, Lampeter Leisure Centre and Penglais School Sports Hall (for community club use only). Essential maintenance works are continuing at Lampeter Swimming Pool and Cardigan Leisure Centre remains as a mass COVID-19 vaccination centre.

Public Notice - 05/05/2021

Sport and physical activity provision to restart on a phased approach

Following The Welsh Government announcement on 23 April 2021, sport and physical activity provision will restart in a phased approach in Ceredigion.

Over the coming weeks, Ceredigion County Council will restart the delivery of its sport and physical activity provision. This includes the re-opening of council operated Leisure facilities, artificial turf pitches (ATPs) and playing fields.

The activities are dependent on there being no significant increase in the number of cases in the county.

  • Wellbeing Walks - 17 May
  • Outdoor Exercise Classes; Community Organisations use of Outdoor Facilities including ATP’s (Lampeter & Synod Inn), Playing Fields – 28 May onwards
  • Indoor Leisure Facilities at Aberaeron Leisure Centre, Lampeter Leisure Centre, Lampeter Swimming Pool including Community Organisation use – 05 July onwards

It is recognised that the dates provided are potentially later than anticipated. However they have been set to ensure that we continue to reduce the risk of any increase in cases and play our part in supporting the local authority’s priorities in the county’s recovery from the coronavirus.

The dates also enable staff who have been seconded to support other council services during the pandemic to return to their posts within the Wellbeing Centre Service.

Plascrug Leisure Centre has now been returned to the local authority from Hywel Dda University Health Board. There are significant decommissioning and re-instatement works required before it can operate as a leisure facility. No date has been set for its re-opening at present.

Cardigan Leisure Centre is currently a Mass Vaccination Centre and will remain so for as long as required by Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Further information will be available on Ceredigion Actifs Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

We would like to thank all users of these facilities for their understanding during this challenging period. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to our activity sessions and facilities.
